FBI reports 160 laptops lost or stolen
Nearly five years ago we told you about how the Feds have a bad habit of losing laptops.
Our August 2002 article said: "The Justice Department's inspector general said Monday that law enforcement groups including the FBI, the Drug Enforcement Administration and the U.S. Marshals Service suffer from 'a lack of accountability,' with at least 400 laptop computers missing, lost or stolen."
Well, not much has changed. The Justice Department's inspector general on Monday released a report (PDF) that says: "Our follow-up audit found that over a 44-month period the FBI reported 160 weapons and 160 laptop computers as lost or stolen."
In government parlance, that's a slight improvement. Remember, though, we're comparing apples and oranges to some extent because the 2002 number was for multiple federal agencies and the new figure is just for the FBI.
One other point: one of the laptops stolen from the FBI's Quantico Laboratory Division contained "names, addresses, and telephone numbers of FBI personnel." Others contained unknown information that could be classified. Most of the missing laptops were lost, not stolen.
