The technology behind 3D movies

October 8, 2007 3:55 AM PDT

The Dolby 3D glasses use multiple coatings on each lens to filter out particular frequencies of light; each lens lets through only a particular set, different for each eye. The glasses cost $50 and use glass lenses for now, but Dolby hopes costs will come down as manufacturing expertise increases and, potentially, as plastic lenses are used. Moviegoers return the glasses at the end of the movie, and a high-speed washer cleans them for the next use.
