Celebrating the 'Internet van' of the 1970s

November 8, 2007 3:59 AM PST

Known today as the "Internet Van," this refurbished vehicle was one of the key pieces in the very first true Internet connection, which was made on November 22, 1977. The van was the first to send data over three separate networks in use at the time: Arpanet, satellite, and packet radio. The van sent digital information over a packet radio network that was transmitted through a satellite network and then through Arpanet. It is now on display at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, Calif., to mark the 30th anniversary of that first transmission.
