The Haier Building at Broadway and 36th in Manhattan was formerly the Greenwich Bank. Haier America CEO Michael Jemal and Executive Vice President Shariff Kan often passed by the bank and liked it. They joked that it would serve as an excellent location for Haier America's headquarters. The company bought it in 2002 after the building went up for sale.

Buying fancy digs in New York is sort of a prerequisite for Asian companies hoping to strike it big in the U.S.
