Images: NASA launches new weapon against forest fires

The images taken by Ikhana are processed processed aboard the plane. The images are transmitted through a communications satellite to NASA Ames where they are placed on an Ames Web site. Then the images are combined with Google Earth maps.

This Sept. 6 image shows hot spots in real-time, which are on the most recent Lick Fire perimeter map.
