Buzz Aldrin, one of the first astronauts to travel to the moon in 1969, spoke at the unveiling at the Google Lunar X Prize, a $30 million contest to put a robotic rover on the lunar surface. Aldrin said that returning to the moon is a significant hurdle for the United States as a means to go onto Mars and further explore space. "Without a doubt the moon is there as a pathway," and putting robots there is a viable first step back, he said.
