A Shadow flies by night, departing Camp Taji, Iraq, in early January. The system is intended to provide brigade commanders with near-real-time targeting data for precision weapons, sending that data over distances up to about 75 miles, though troops also use it to spot dangers such as IEDs. It can recognize tactical vehicles from an altitude of 8,000 feet at a slant range of more than 2 miles, AAI says.
