Photos: Bright lights, big sand dunes

White Sands National Monument features hundreds of acres of sand dunes formed from gypsum sand blown 15 miles northeast from New Mexico's Lake Lucero. The result is almost pure-white dunes that go on and on and on, with each succeeding dune barely distinguishable from the last.

The blowing wind actually results in the dunes "moving" as sand blows up to the top and down over the edge. The dunes are estimated to move as much as 30 feet per year.
