Wave power is actively being pursued as way to generate electricity from the water currents.

This is a model of the Kobold system, a wave power generator installed in the Straits of Messina in Italy.

The generator, which has been operating since 2001, was connected to the Italian national electricity grid in 2006.

The Kobald system's makers say it is the first wave power system to be permanently connected to a grid. They also say the design can have very low environmental impact because the blades of the turbine move slow enough for fish to swim between them.
