This is the Moonbeam, a three-wheel "microcar" that gets between 85 and 105 miles per gallon, according to its creator, Jory Squibb.
Frustrated with the amount of money it took to fill up his Toyota, Squibb built the 400-pound Moonbeam in his garage last winter, with about $2,500 in materials and about 1,000 hours of labor, according to his Web site.
When he heard about the Automotive X Prize, Squibb formed the Maine Automotive X team to work on a new car (that's "drop-dead beautiful" and has four wheels) for the competition.
