Images: Newest X Prize targets 100 mpg car

Another familiar name in the alternative car industry is Zap Motors, which also plans to compete in the Automotive X Prize. In January, the company said it would team with Lotus to develop an electric sports car, and in its letter of intent, Zap indicated the two companies would collaborate on the X Prize entry as well.

Tesla Motors, another heavy hitter in the electric car scene, also has plans to submit an entry.
