On March 23, 1989, the Exxon Valdez ran aground in Alaska's pristine Prince William Sound, dumping 11 million gallons of crude oil into the water. To this day, it remains the worst oil spill in U.S. history. One major recovery method was employing the steam blasting of rocks covered in oil.
