One of the most cost-effective forms of renewable energy today comes from solar-thermal power plants, where mirrors or troughs reflect light to make heat. The heat creates steam to turn a turbine power generator. Originally developed in Australia, the solar-thermal technology from Ausra is scheduled to be tried out by California utility Pacific Gas & Electric next year.
