In the aftermath of Viacom's $1 billion copyright infringement lawsuit against Google, there is a silly notion making the rounds that Viacom is making a terrible business mistake. Viacom's critics are snorting mad. They maintain that by demanding that YouTube pull purloined videos off its service, Viacom is only hurting itself because the Google-owned video-sharing site is a "promotional vehicle."

CNET News.com's Charles Cooper has something to say about that--as well as a few other woolly headed notions that have come to be embraced by otherwise right-thinking folks.
