A digital-identification law now on the books has become a touchstone for controversy. The Real ID Act, which hands the Department of Homeland Security many new powers, defends the provision as essential to national security. But there's growing state resistance to the implementation of the new law, which is slated to go into effect by 2008. In this week's edition of the CNET News.com's Tech Politics Rundown, Charles Cooper and Declan McCullagh are joined by Jim Harper, director of information policy studies at the CATO Institute.
