Researcher: Bin Laden's beard is real, video is not

On the Friday before the sixth anniversary of 9/11, Osama bin Laden appeared in a new video, his first since prior to the U.S. presidential elections in 2004. In analyzing the video, Neal Krawetz of Hactor Factor, an expert on digital image forensics, said in his latest blogs that the video contained many visual and audio splices, and that all of the modifications were of very low quality.

Most striking is bin Laden's beard, which has been gray in recent images. For this video it is black. "As far as my tools can detect, there has been no image manipulation of the bin Laden portion of the image beyond contrast adjustment. His beard really does appear to be that color." The Washington Post has the full video here.

Krawetz says the inner frame of bin Laden was resaved at least twice, and not at the same time. The images show fine horizontal stripes on bin Laden and a background indicating these came from interlaced video sources. In contrast, the text elements, such as the As-Sahab logo, appear to be from non-interlaced sources.

The September 7 video shows bin Laden dressed in a white hat, white shirt and yellow sweater. Krawetz notes "this is the same clothing he wore in the 2004-10-29 video. In 2004 he had it unzipped, but in 2007 he zipped up the bottom half. Besides the clothing, it appears to be the same background, same lighting, and same desk. Even the camera angle is almost identical." Krawetz also notes that "if you overlay the 2007 video with the 2004 video, his face has not changed in three years--only his beard is darker and the contrast on the picture has been adjusted."

More important though are the edits. At roughly a minute and a half into the video there is a splice; bin Laden shifts from looking at the camera to looking down in less than 1/25th of a second. At 13:13 there is a second, less obvious splice. In all, Krawetz says there are at least six splices in the video. Of these, there are only two live bin Laden segments, the rest of the video composed of still images. The first live section opens the video and ends at 1:56. The second section begins at 12:29 and continues until 14:01. The two live sections appear to be from different recordings "because the desk is closer to the camera in the second section."

Then there are the audio edits. Krawetz says "the new audio has no accompanying 'live' video and consists of multiple audio recordings." References to current events are made only during the still frame sections and after splices within the audio track." And there are so many splices that I cannot help but wonder if someone spliced words and phrases together. I also cannot rule out a vocal imitator during the frozen-frame audio. The only way to prove that the audio is really bin Laden is to see him talking in the video," Krawetz says.

Another bin Laden video was released on September 11 and was much more straightforward. There was a still image of the black-bearded bin Laden (oddly, using a frame not used in the previous video), and then, as has been a tradition at al-Qaida , there was a long, unedited video of a statement read by Azzam Al Amriki, also known as American-born Adam Pearlman, who is currently being sought for treason and thought to be living in Pakistan. That doesn't mean the 9/11-released video wasn't doctored.

Click here and mouse over the image to see Krawetz's 75 percent error level analysis of one image. The white frame around Azzim reveals that his video was composited against the drawing of the World Trade Center being attacked. As Krawetz presented at this year's Black Hat conference in Las Vegas, al-Qaida has a history of doctoring background either to present propaganda or simply to disguise locations. In a separate interview, Krawetz talks with CNET News.com about some of the tools he used in his analysis.

I think it was a mistake for bin Laden to try to make his comeback
at the Video Music Awards. His handlers had to know that he would
be upstaged by Britney, and he seemed as though he was nervous
and hadn't properly rehearsed. I read that he was out until 3am
herding goats and gathering kindling. The outfit is all wrong, too.
It's dated and doesn't compliment his fugure.

CIA needs better tech...
by Jim_Mattos September 12, 2007 1:15 PM PDT
Guess the CIA needs to hire better video forgers;o) Pretty curious
that this 'new video' makes it's way into the public sphere just as
Gen. Patraeus is about to make his big announcement as Bush's
lackey for continuing this insane war. Coincidental timing...I think
not!

You're kidding, right?

Jim_Mattos: Man, either you are ignorant, or I missed your sarcasm.

First, the CIA and US Government are not behind this. They have received years and years worth of analysis from a wide variety of experts - and the experts all say the same thing. If the government was behind this, the quality of the videos would be getting BETTER and not WORSE because of the expert advise sent into them.

Second, the timing IS coincidental. Al Qaeda has ALWAYS released a 9/11 anniversary video. This is not new. And Patraeus was scheduled to speak before Congress. In fact, Al Qaida chose 9/11 in 2001 because Congress was back in session. To think that these tapes are related to Patraeus is sheer stupidity.

I have a lot more respect for General Patraeus than I do for
people who make wild claims while offering no proof. And if you
can't figure out who I mean then I will give you a clue. Look in
any mirror.

Oftentimes I get the feeling a lot of people in this country do not
deserve the Military we have. If I were to be dropped into the
middle of enemy terrorists I would prefer to be surrounded by a
single squad of our fine Military over thousands of people like
you who feel that we can negotiate with them. At least that way I
would have a chance of getting out alive.

Did you read the original blog?

Probably not - the *ONLY* thing that the video analysis reveals is that A) The video has been edited in various ways (cuts and titling, etc), and B) There is nothing that indicates the actual video of bin Laden is contemporary. In other words, it appears *whoever* produced this video attempted to cleverly edit an older video so as to make it appear contemporary. Some only read the headlines declaring the video a "fake" and rush off to post on news sites that this "proves" the CIA/Bush produce and plant these videos, as if the analysis had concluded the video was completely assembled by hand in After Effects, and bin Laden had been modled in Maya and rendered with Vray. Nice. Then if you ever video taped a child's birthday party, used Windows Movie Maker (free in Windows XP!!!) or Apple iMovie (Free in OSX!!!) to edit it, put up some titles with your child's name and birthday and spit the video out as a DVD, Windows Media file, or Quicktime Movie, then you MUST conclude your child is a fake as well, planted by the CIA. Because the analysis of the bid Laden movie concluded only that the above had taken place to his video (several times for some of the elements) - not who released it and why, nor that bin Laden had been done in CG.

Bin Laden Tape Forgets the Funny; Promises "Calm, Pretty Skies"
by clusterdouche September 14, 2007 12:50 PM PDT
Making his regularly scheduled pre-9/11 appearance on Al Jazeera?s smash hit Cave-In With Harpo bin Steinberg-Akeem, long-lost Saudi sweetheart and 3-time Global Cave-Dwellathon Champion Osama ?Not Our Priority? bin Laden gave an Impending Wrath of Allah speech that strangely forgot the wrath part. Militant Al?Qaeda leaders condemned the speech as ?soft? and ?obviously written by Bush speechwriters.?

?He forgot the funny,? said Deputy Operations Chief and Prom Committee Chairman Ayman ?Ay, Mon!? al-Zawahiri in an angry internet rant posted this evening to YouTube. ?Where was the Rain of Fire? Where was the Vengeful Serpent that will bite the heads and genitals of the infidels? Those are show-stoppers, that?s comedy gold."

The story continues.

CNN-The most untrusted name in news
by nexus-one September 19, 2007 7:32 PM PDT
before the video was released, a banner saying "may God protect Osama, blah, blah, blah." was found on some Arabic website. Correct me if i'm wrong, but would'nt they have said "may Allah protect Osama", if it was genuine. As soon as i saw the original story on cnn, and heard what they were reporting, my jaw dropped. I pointed that flaw out to everyone. CNN, the most UNtrusted name in news.

Why does it matter...
by canadian_nutt March 19, 2008 3:32 PM PDT
If Bin Laden posed any threat to any of us I might take these videos seriously, but considering the lies of 911, the lies about Iraq, and the fact that finding whomever orchestrated 911 is apparently not important, this is just another ploy by the U.S. government to scare us into allowing them to take away your rights and freedoms. I.E. "The Patriot Act"

Oh, and if you want to find the people behind 911, check somewhere close to the oval office, he goes by the name of Dick!
