Does Al Gore deserve the Nobel Prize?

For someone who has a reputation for being boring and wooden, Al Gore certainly is polarizing.

News.com Poll

Peace, out
Does Al Gore deserve the Nobel Peace Prize for his work on global warming?

Yes, absolutely. It's well-deserved.
Maybe, but others merit more credit.
No way. He's a total huckster.

Supporters assert that he has been one of the principal actors in bringing awareness to global warming and prompting governments and industry to take action against greenhouse emissions. While a lot of people became familiar with his work through the recent film "An Inconvenient Truth," Gore has been writing on the issue since the '80s.

Detractors, however, say he's an opportunist who exaggerates the scientific evidence and doesn't even follow his own advice. Witness the furor over reports that his mansion in Tennessee is an energy guzzler.

On Friday, Gore shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which has been assembling comprehensive scientific reports and recommendations on global warming for the U.N. The prize has also revived talk that Gore may run for president in 2008.

"He is probably the single individual who has done most to create greater worldwide understanding of the measures that need to be adopted," said Ole Danbolt Mjos, chairman of the Nobel committee, as quoted in CNN.

But what do you think? Visionary or hypocrite? Does he deserve the prize? Write a comment in the TalkBack section. A poll will be up soon.

Global Warming is Good
by TomboSlicko October 12, 2007 9:51 AM PDT
Wisconsin is a better place now. Global Warming is helping out alot. I think we should conserve energy and limit pollution on its own merits for a better environment. Whether what humans do has anything to do with Global Warming is an open question and really matters little to me. Al Gore should run for president because Hillary is scary. So yes Al Gore deserves the Nobel Peace prize because his ego will grow to the point of having him enter the race.

Oddly enough, it's not the Nobel SCIENCE prize...
by jaydyess October 12, 2007 10:09 AM PDT
My biggest problem is that there was no attempt (that I've seen) by the Nobel committee to tie his work to PEACE. The Nobel Peace Prize has simply become a man-of-the-year award for the Left.

Man-Made Global Warming is a fraud.
by MyRightEye October 12, 2007 10:11 AM PDT
But then again that is fitting a man like Al Gore. So why not.

I think Alger would try to con us to believe the title above if he
could. He is full of hot air and has a following of worshipers. He
did NO research on his own, deserves no award other than for
scaring people and causing undeserved panic.

Al Boring
by Lenter101 October 12, 2007 10:35 AM PDT
There is no question the Earth is going through a warming phase. The question is why? The Earth's weather is never static but rather is always warming or always cooling. We've gone through much more dramatic weather changes in the past, long before manmade CO2 emissions showed up. WHY? What was responsible for the ice ages and the resulting warm ups? Why did we have 3000 feet of ice covering beautiful Yosemite Valley 20,000 years ago? What made all of that ice melt?

Without clear cut explanations of these past extremes in weather I'm a little hesitant to embrace the politically charged explanation that Al Boring and his buddies are insisting is the only answer.

Is the Earth warming? Yes. Is it caused by manmade emissions, I don't know. To embrace that as fact you have to disregard the fact that co2 emissions rose from 1940 thru 1970 and yet global temperature actually fell. There are some serious questions that need to be answered before we go storming into a multibillion dollar solution for a problem that might not exists for the reasons we think. Something to think about.

He also deserves to be President.
by j_berman October 12, 2007 10:42 AM PDT
If Gore had been president: 1)the enormous amount of carbon and greenhouse gases wasted on the Iraq war would not have occurred. 2)We would not have wasted tons of oil to help grow the food to feed the young men and women who are now dying just to line the pockets of the Bush cronies. 3) Alternative energies would have been years closer to fruition. And so on. Thanks, I feel better, now.

Will he run now? Poll says probably not.

This live poll suggests most don't think this will pull him into the race...

Would someone please tell me how in the WORLD talking about Global Warming (especially when you have one of the biggest carbon footprints imaginable!) qualifies you for the PEACE prize!?!? Since when does Global Warming have ANYTHING to do with peace?!

by LastPhalanx October 12, 2007 10:49 AM PDT
I think Al is still mad about losing credit for the internet, oh yeah in the 2000 election. Watch out for the salt in the wound. Next thing you know poor Al will try pulling the old okey-doke on the cure for cancer.

Ridiculous
by autoboy70 October 12, 2007 10:59 AM PDT
This makes me pretty upset. His alarmist, false claims for global warming upset the public balance and give him even more false credibility. Science is not proven by a show of hands. When will politicians learn this? Many of the results of his absurd claims are overall positive for the earth like reduction of meaningful pollution and reduced dependence on oil, but we could be doing all those things without the excess baggage of reducing C02 when it has an unproven and expensive cost on our society.

Al Gore does have a big carbon footprint, but he pays the electric company a higher rate to buy only green power.

Maybe, Maybe Not!
by independent thinker October 12, 2007 11:11 AM PDT
He deserves credit for remaining active on a topic that should be
of great concern to all of us. His personal motivation is
secondary to the fact that what he is doing is forcing people to
recognize and talk about the issue. And regardless of our
personal opinions, it will lead to a better understanding of our
planet. If our gluttonous lifestlyes and reckless consumption of
natural resources are to blame for global warming, only time will
tell for sure. But that doesn't mean we should sit back and take
the classic wait and see mentality. Like a suspicious mole or
lump on a breast, this is something we can't afford to put off.
We should all get over the love or hate AL Gore mentality and do
some research on the topic for ourselves. Don't let politics,
bloggers or ignorant radio hosts sway your opinion. Think for
yourself for a change America!!!

Fits in well with Yasser Arafat and Jimmy Carter. Not as murderous as Arafat as far as we know, but joins them with his new anti-American badge of honor.

What's wrong with conservation?
by DMAN3k October 12, 2007 11:28 AM PDT
Al Gore got people to think about conservation and recycling more. I don't see any harm in that.

Now, if Al Gore turns out to be right about the other stuff, aren't we all screwed?

There's no harm in conservation, but there might be a harm in not conserving. I'll take my chances and conserve.

Sure, why not...
by billmosby October 12, 2007 11:37 AM PDT
He deserves it at least as much As Yassir Arafat did. In fact, why
not give him Arafat's as well? Yassir probably doesn't need it
anymore.
