Bank robber hires decoys on Craigslist, fools cops

In an elaborate robbery scheme that's one part The Thomas Crowne Affair and one part Pineapple Express, a crook robbed an armored truck outside a Bank of America branch in Monroe, Wash., by hiring decoys through Craigslist to deter authorities.

It gets better: He then escaped in a creek headed for the Skykomish River in an inner tube, and the cops are still looking for him. "A great amount of money" was taken, Monroe police said, but did not provide a dollar value.

It appears to have unfolded this way, according to a Seattle-based NBC affiliate: around 11:00 a.m. PDT on Tuesday, the robber, wearing a yellow vest, safety goggles, a blue shirt, and a respirator mask went over to a guard who was overseeing the unloading of cash to the bank from the truck. He sprayed the guard with pepper spray, grabbed his bag of money, and fled the scene.

But here's the hilarious twist. The robber had previously put out a Craigslist ad for road maintenance workers, promising wages of $28.50 per hour. Recruits were asked to wait near the Bank of America right around the time of the robbery--wearing yellow vests, safety goggles, a respirator mask, and preferably a blue shirt. At least a dozen of them showed up after responding to the Craigslist ad.

"I came across the ad that was for a prevailing wage job for $28.50 an hour," one of the unwitting decoys, named Mike, said to the NBC station. As it turns out, they were simply placed there to confuse cops who were looking for a guy wearing a virtually identical outfit.

Authorities eventually found the getaway inner tube (a getaway inner tube!) and suspect that accomplices may have picked up the robber in a boat. According to the NBC affiliate, police hope to track him down by figuring out who posted the Craigslist ad in the first place.

Craigslist founder Craig Newmark was not immediately available for comment.

Good story!

I guess the economy really is in the toilet when someone this innovative is robbing banks.

Good luck tracking the Craigslist post. Some random device + connect to public WIFI = excellent anonymity.

The bad part is that the guy was probably an honest guy, just pushed over the edge by the economic times lately. Unfortunately, times like this will test a person's honesty. You can only be pushed so far, until you have to do something desperate. I know that what he did was not right, but I also understand why he had to do such a thing.

I think it is a bit premature to try assigning motives. It may have had nothing to do with the economy. He might be nothing more than a thrill seeker or someone who just wants to prove he is smarter than the rest of us.
by JaredRocco October 3, 2008 9:12 AM PDT
You are a retard. A guy commits aggravated assault and puts a dozen innocent people at risk - can you imagine if one of these poor guys takes off in a panic when the cops show up and gets shot? - and you think 'economic times' have pushed him to do it?

What color is the sky in the world you live in? Or are you just stupid?
by DevlDoc October 3, 2008 10:01 AM PDT
Are you serious? Oh no, of course its not his fault, its the economy that made him do it. We should feel bad for him, maybe he just needs a hug and a big government hand out. He obviously deserves that money, and the guard he assaulted is just a pawn of "the man" who probably had it coming. Here is a news flash, the economy isn't nearly as bad off as it was during the depression, you tool. I mean, how can a man expect to find a job with 6.1% unemployment!!! Oh that's right the other 94.9% did I guess those of with a job should just pony up more taxes so losers like him don't get pushed to the point of desperation. Maybe, instead of playing part time psychologist and full time bleeding heart nob, you could do something productive like research our history.

@ BPS277 , This armed robber is some poor honest guy driven to spray pepper spray ino the eyes of innocent people so he could carry out a robbery, because the stock market fell this week? Are you for real?
Lemme guess, you are yet another of the deranged Obama supporters, no?
In your book, it's never the criminals fault is it? It's always the victimswho are assualted that are at fault, isn't it?

This is pocket change consider how much the government steals from the poor to give to the rich. Robinhood in reverse! It is government today that creates the big economic inequality in America.

And another thing, banks steal from the poor through their hidden fees. The only time they would give back is when the attorney general get on their case, and at the end, you don't get all your hidden fees back, only a portion and a portion goes to the attorney general and the government.

There are many kind of thieves. The biggest ones are in government.

Steals from the poor? Which country are you in? The poor don't pay much taxes. Most are collecting benefits.
by humanssssss October 3, 2008 11:34 AM PDT
@freemarket--2008

4% of America's wealth belong to 50% of America's population. The rich doesn't pay much taxes. Most of their money are tied to their wealth. Most working Americans who earn an income are the one paying the most taxes.

When you said "most are collecting benefits" ... are you saying that more than 50% of American's population collecting benefits. Qualifier is poor argument against factual numbers.
by DevlDoc October 3, 2008 1:05 PM PDT
The top 3% of wage earners pay over 50% of the entire tax burden. The lower 47% of wage earners pay no tax at all and I am not taking about their SS deductions. Of course that not enough for you socialist out there, and you wonder why the rich look for loop holes. Just wait until the Dems get in the oval office and tax the **** out of the wealthy. You think the jobless rate is bad now wait until the wealthy decide to hold onto their cash and not create as many jobs as they would if their tax burden was reduced.
by DeepReader October 3, 2008 4:37 PM PDT
Oh please DevlDoc. Are you seriously implying that the wealthy are doing everyone a favor? The reason that lower 47% of wage earners pay little taxes is because of their own choices in life. Its just the way it is. Everyone looks for loop holes, its just that the more wealthy have more options. So that top 3%... they choose to fill those shoes. Thats just the way it is.
by humanssssss October 3, 2008 5:39 PM PDT
@Devildoc

Not create jobs? Rich people don't create jobs. Poor people do. They are the demand that drive economic growth. If you infer that pumping billions in creating jobs and producing no economic growth, I'm so not for it because this is the bubble that happened during the dot-com and it is happening with the credit expansion. Sooner or later, the bubble is going to burst, and it is going to burst bigger.

Sustainable job creation through demand is better than through subsidizing rich folks to create artificial jobs that will end in travesty for the economy which in the end will further divide the rich and poor. When these two classes of rich and poor become so great, there's going to be a communist revolution. Karl Marx took this opportunity during his days to surge the working class to a revolution. And if you want this to happen again, you better go buy yourself a gun, it's not going to be fun.

The laws need to be fair and just in a market economy for people to play and for economic equality and growth be reached. When laws keep changing to favor the rich, there's no way in hell poor people can compete. Every so often, Congress pass laws to take taxpayers money to give to the rich either through subsidize, below market loan, war profiteering, or bailout.

@ DevlDoc - Yeah, your 'trickle down economics' really works great.
The rich get a whole lot richer, the middle class becomes extinct as they lose their homes.
by theloniousMac October 7, 2008 5:05 PM PDT
@humansssss

The rich pay the vast majority of the taxes in this country.
The government doesn't "steal" anything from the poor.
The government TAXES the crap out of the wealthy.
Robin Hood was nothing but a thief.
Banks don't hide fees. They very up front with them.
Charging fees is how banks stay in business.

I don't want to spoil your delusional world with facts or anything, but sometimes people have to grow up, stop listening to Air America or whatever your source of "information" is and read a book. I recommend The Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith. By the time you finish that, you might actually know something worth sharing.
by The1egend October 9, 2008 9:54 AM PDT
While I don't condone the behavior of the man, I take issue with the numbers being thrown around in this forum. The only facts I can find with my limited research time using google, point to the top 1% as of 2004 having 34% of the nations wealth. Also the top 20% hold more than 84% of the nations wealth. Leaving less than 16% of the total wealth of the nation in the hands of 80% of the nation. I am all for people making their own way, and making huge sums of money doing it. I congratulate the Mark Zuckerbergs and the Gates' of our times. I just also believe that as they hold a disproportionate amount of wealth in comparison to the country, they can afford to be taxed in such a manner as well. Now understand this, this is wealth statistics that I pulled from various websites in about 15 min of looking. They may not be 100% accurate, but they should be close, since they all point to the same general numbers. Also this isn't income statistics which are similar, but not the same measurement. You could theoretically have no income for a long time and still be extremely filthy wealthy. (Like how I'm sure Bill Gates has lost billions of dollars this year, and so his net income is negative, but no one would accuse him of not being wealthy).

We should take a moment to examine the psychological and financial stress that our government officals have imposed on society. There's no doubt that this man is innovative and at the same time, obviously broke (that is until now). While most crimes are commited by lazy low-lifer's seeking the emtional thrill of it all, we are now so economically pressed that it's possible the poor guy may have been the victim of Eron or some other financial institution who robbed him (with the permission of our government) of all his money. I dont condon stealing, or any other crimes for that matter. However, I can't honestly say what I would decend to doing if I suddenly lost my job to an over-seas corporation, or woke up one monrning to find out that all my money has been taken from me from what is supposed to be the safest place to keep it (the bank) and my dreams of my children going to college vanishes; I lose my home, and if that's not enough, my wife also. I've tried so hard to examine my moral standards, but I cant ecape the fact that while I'm against what he done, I can certainly understand!! (Did I say that!!!) If this government does'nt make some drastic changes I assume that this type of behavior will have a snowball effect and may become as common as Mom's Apple Pie.

Wow, do some of you bleeding hearts read deep into things. 1st off, Enron was 7 years ago. 2nd, the economics of today are nothing compared to the great depression. News flash your money is insured unless you have over 100,000 in a specific bank. Its unfortunate that your marriage isn't strong enough to survive calamity. I guess for better or worse goes out the door when the Dow drops a 1000 points and unemployment hits a staggering 6.1%. I don't know how you can "understand" what this creep did, I mean the guy assaults a working man and takes someone else hard earned money. The only thing to understand is that this man is a crook. I also don't understand what you mean by the government making some "drastic changes". Sure we should just let those of us who are willing to work pay for the rest of the idiots who can't handle this bump in the road or just don't feel like working. I don't make a ton of money but the little I do make I want to keep for me and my family not for whiners and wannabes. by kanttouchthis October 3, 2008 11:19 AM PDT
I appreciate your response. You just confirmed the ignorant mentality that most republicans have toward emotional
humanitarianism. I have an old saying for you as well. (Dont ever say what you wont do!!!) It's amazing how you republicans defend the United States government officials that are in office today. I'm not wishing anything bad on you, but let the RIGHT KIND OF DEMISE hit you and your family and then we'll see how your views change. And since your'e such a expert on the great depression, you should've looked up the facts on family relations. Yes, I agree that a marriage should stand the worst of times, but that's not the reality of life. More families were broken up during that period than what there is today (giving the population percentage) Yes, Eron was 7 years ago, just enough time for all the econmic clamity to hit home. How can you condemn one robber(the man) and uphold the other robber (the government) A double minded man is unstable in ALL HIS WAYS, which is the banner that should be stretched across the WHITE HOUSE AND YOUR HOUSE AS WELL!!!!!
by kanttouchthis October 3, 2008 12:10 PM PDT
I'm all for wethering the storm out, and digging into the seems and holding on till a change comes. However, it's hard enough to deal with disasters coming from external sources, bust to have your own statesmen screw you and get away with it is a hard pill to swallow. I can deal with the bump on the road; it's the bump on the head imposed by this republican administration that I cant deal with. I guess youv'e been a republican for so long and they've hit you on the head so much that now you can't see. Just like the bank robber, I feel sorry for you too!!
You want to get your sight back? Which over to the Democratic side and you'll see again!! LOL
by lynnettaz October 3, 2008 1:10 PM PDT
Why is it always so obvious when someone is a republican? I'm not supportive of this guy assaulting another person but what you don't understand is that he wasn't stealing anyone's hard earned money - as you mentioned our money is insured. Therefore he is robbing one of these big corporate banks that is making out with my hard earned tax dollars at the moment. Why do you republicans always cry no to regulations when the business are making a profit but as soon as they tank due to their own criminal scruples the republicans go batty for a "bail out" plan. I don't make a lot of money either and I sure as hell don't appreciate the amount the government takes being handed over to these banks to save their *****. I think the bank got a teeny tiny dose of what it deserves. Maybe you are bitter because this man is a little more imaginitive than yourself.

As of yesterday, via Oprah (Ali).............monies held in banks (FDIC) will be insured up to $250,000. How ture.....we'll see.
by affinity13 October 6, 2008 7:42 AM PDT
Enron was 7 years ago and people are still hurting from it. It may not be news worthy anymore but there are still people that are hurting. True the economy today is no where near great depression era, however, employment is an issue as my own wife is not able to find a job that would pay enough to put our kid in daycare while she works. I can understand and realize some scenarios where people would break the law to make ends meet. I can also realize some scenarios where they did it just to steal money to buy drugs or go on a spending spree. In regards to economics the government has to put some barriers in and re-regulate the banking and financial industry so the economy doesn't have opportunity to get to this point.

The greatest economic downturn since the Great Depression is just a "bump in the road" huh money bags? And why do Democrats have to be Communists......? Sir, have you bumped your head?
I'm not even going to state the obvious about our economy, Sean Penn's character in "I am Sam" could easily discern that the blame goes to a Republican run white house, spending our money practicing torture and breeding radicals, under the guise of freeing a non enemy, while all the while being unable to locate our real threat. Oh, I said I wasn't going to state the obvious, mea culpa.
As far as the whole robin hood theory goes, its a crock of horse manure, BUT, the sentiment "that a mans gotta do what a mans gotta do" is always more popular among the people when they are lacking the essentials. And who cares if enron was seven years ago, tell that to the people that worked there for 30 years, invested their entire life savings, just to see it evaporate right before their eyes. And dimwits and rocket scientists alike know that the 50% divorce rates cornerstone is economic hardship.
But then again, you wouldnt know about that would you money bags.
The second largest slice of the pie is a much more personal problem.........but you probably already know that, huh moneybags?

> "The greatest economic downturn since the Great Depression is just a "bump in the road" huh money bags?"

I'd say so. I still have my job. In fact, I'm doing better than I was a year ago. I'm sure no "money bags", just Joe American making an average salary. Yeah, my 401k is down bigtime, but I still own the same amount of shares, so I really haven't lost any money unles I tried to cash them out.

Oh but by all means, the sky is falling. Let's panic! Let's blame everyone except crooked execs, lawyers, and the morons who decided to give out bad loans to people who couldn't really afford them. How do you regulate a business (Fannie/Fred) whose primary goal is to make bad financial investments?
by westreply October 3, 2008 10:49 AM PDT
fantastic view of our current society ! ! yes, robbery is wrong & the money was not his. yes, the guard should not have to suffer. yes, we shouldn't condone or approve of things in society that are wrong. . .AND ever been jacked up by a police officer for NO Reason? someone who supposedly serves you, not oppresses you. Ever learn of a business person exploiting honest laborers for their own profit and gain? Congressmen and women abusing thier position in government to a gross degree for their own profit and gain? NOT in the service of citizens? Ever get a major attitude from a postal worker for NO Reason, you've simply asked a question about postal service and now they're acting like a Federal Law Inforcement Officer complete with rudeness??

where is ? Justice.. seen it lately?? wake up every day with the certainty that this is YOUR United States of America ??? I know I don't. John Malkovich's (character) in the film, "In the Line of Fire" said it this way: IT DOESN'T WORK. So police officers, prison guards, elected government officials are SUPPOSED to stick to a higher standard of honesty, truthfulness and service of you and I, the citizens of this nation and they VERY OFTEN Don't. . . how much does that man who robbed the money have to adhere to?? do we think he really would be the type to get a handgun, enter a bank the next time then shoot someone while robbing? each of us simply tries to live our own lives in the cleanest way and we try to let that which does not concern us slide.

This is one of the simplest and fantatstic ROBBERY I've ever known. Robbery is not right end of the discussion, BUT I felt that there was some aggressions came out from my CHEST when I learned HE ROBBED THE BANK WITHOUT POEPLE BEING KILLED - ABSOLUTE VALOR!! People in the United States are being LEGALLY robbed and abused everyday OF their LIVES and the POEPLE who does it GETS away easily without even being questioned why. This GUY who did it has it all the reasons why he did it. Probably, he lost his job, home, wife, abused in a company he worked with etc, etc.. and I suspect he is a VERY SMART GUY TOO and A PRO...TAKE IT AWAY MY MAN, ENJOY THE MONEY.. DON'T GET CAUGHT..

Okay, since you seem to want him to have the money, can we just get your account number so we can deduct the amount from your savings....? Or maybe we can come to your house and you can hand it over after you take a shot of pepper spray to the face?
No, that would be illegal. More importantly, it would be wrong.
by bruceslog October 7, 2008 3:03 PM PDT
@ brocksmetalworks - What savings ? Wall Street took our savings... took my grampa for almost 2 million dollars. He died in May, broke.
Yes, robbing banks, and any theft, is wrong. What these people are saying is that so many Americans feel that we've been being robbed BLIND for a long time by the very people elected to protect us. Which is leading these many people to applaud this thief's ingenuity and innovative way of taking back the money without having to kill anyone in the process. ( If he hadn't pepper sprayed the guard, the guard would have pulled his gun, and things would have gotten ugly real fast ).
It's wrong to do. Yet some people are going to do it anyway. This guy did it with flair and imagination. In some peoples minds, he 'earned' what he stole. With nothing less than just his style.
But since you seem to take things oh, so seriously and personally, I reckon you won't see it that way. But the rest of us think he was pretty damn smart about what he decided to do, even though he was in the wrong and broke the law, as so many of us really do realize.
( Otherwise we'd ALL be robbing banks to make our house payments ! , don't you think ? )
So relax, take another pill, and look at the story as something to read as newsworthy as it was.... and see if you can admire how the guy pulled off the heist with as much flair as he did.
A Get-A-Way in a inner tube ! Now that is a unique way of thinking ahead !
The guy had some huge balls, gotta give him that.

"What savings ? Wall Street took our savings... took my grampa for almost 2 million dollars. He died in May, broke. "

Bruce, I'm sorry for your loss. It doesn't sound like Grandpa was going to be able to spend the 2 million anyways. If he was one of those religious types, maybe he even appreciated it (the poor will be rich in heaven?). Or are you just upset that you didn't get an inheritance?

Why are we glorifying this criminal? We have no background information on him. Even *IF* he just lost his job, money, wife, etc... He has no right to take the money. His scheme was brilliant, yes. Why not use the same amount of thought and effort to get a real job?

Stealing any amount is wrong. It's no wonder why we're in such trouble (I'm speaking more moral and financial) in this country. If you can justify doing something wrong- then okay. Just like the german incest dad... Oh- his mommy was mean to him, that means what he did was okay. boo-hoo.

You people fall right into Obama's "distribution of wealth" plan... sitting there with your hand open waiting for someone to give you what you think you deserve. Try hard work if you want to earn money. And keep your damn hands out of my pocket.

Wow... I love reading through these comments because I learn so many new things. I just learned that there is only one bank that people can use and if you don't like the fees they charge then too bad. There is absolutely nothing that you can do about it. If only we had a choice about the banks that we used... If only there were more options...

Hey, Caroline, you are seriously one twisted person for using these phrases of: "...It gets better..." "...But here's the hilarious twist..." To describe a felony robbery and assault.

Let's try it this way. Would you have used "It gets better" had the armed guard been shot in the head as is usual in armored car robberies?

This person assaulted the guard and stole cash. This is real life people, not some fraking game of real life.

Caroline, you basically should be ashamed of yourself.

@oldmanangry:

Yes, because getting shot in the head and getting pepper-sprayed are one in the same.

She has nothing to be ashamed of. You just need to learn when something is humorous to pretty much everyone else... then it is probably funny... and that YOU might be the one who should be ashamed of being such an angry old man.

Enjoy life. It is easier for everyone that way!

My Daddy was a bankrobber
But he never hurt nobody
He just loved to live that way
And he loved to steal your money

Some is rich
some is poor
that's the way the world is
But I don't believe in lying back
And saying how bad your life is

So he Craigslisted to jaz it up
Never loved a shovel
"Wear your yellow vest for your 28 fitty"
And don't forget to grovel

Daddy was a bankrobber
But he never hurt nobody
He just loved to live that way
And he loved to take your money (What law?)

12 men showed
up at the scene
each said "I really need the money"
He ran off didn't pay them boys
do you still think it was funny?

Imagine if all the boys in jail
Could put an ad on Craig's list
What do you think they'd want to sell to us?
The handshake or the hard fist?

Get away, get away
Get away, get away
Get away, get away
Get away

Tube, Laddy, Tube!

Strike out boy
For the hills
I can't find that hole in the wall
I know that they never will

My Daddy was a bankrobber
But he never hurt nobody
He just loved to live that way
And he loved to steal your money

I love The Clash. Awesome song. Thanks for the reminder. I'm going to listen to it now.

He better be careful! If he plays his cards right and makes sure he next moves are interesting, even if he gets caught he'll have some spicy movie rights to sell! ;]
