Apple plans 2GB iPod Shuffle, cuts price on 1GB player

Apple on Tuesday shuffled (har, har) its lineup of matchbook-size digital music players, announcing a new iPod Shuffle with double the storage space and slashing the price of its 1GB models to $49.

Apple dropped the price of its 1GB iPod Shuffle to $49 and said it'll start selling 2GB models for $69 later this month.

The 2GB version of the screenless flash memory-based player will cost $69 and be available for sale later this month, Apple said in a statement. That's less than the previous price for a new 1GB model, at $79. (Apple has, however, been selling refurbished 1GB Shuffles for $49 in recent months.)

Both models, which sport a built-in clip, are slated to come in five colors: silver, blue, green, purple, and red--for the (Product) Red lineup, a corporate charity movement that donates a portion of sales from designated products to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria.

Apple released the second generation of the teensy gadget, which weighs half an ounce and measures half a cubic inch in volume, in November 2006. It has refreshed the Shuffle's colors on a few occasions since then.

everybody else has gone 2,4,8gb on the teeny tiny players , but apple hasn't ! it's about time ! and their dropping the ridiculous price on the 1gb also ! it's funny really , they've been selling the 1gb shuffle for a awhile now and people have still handed over $70 just to get it ! yet you can get a sandisk clip or a zen stone with 2gb for half of that stupid 1gb ipod shuffle price !

Took the words right out of my mouth...

...seriously, I was about to write just that. It boggles my mind that the Shuffle sold at such a (comparatively) exorbitant price for as long as it did. Even now, there are options that are a better value: Sansa Clip and Zen Stone.
I like the shuffle

Sandisk clip is a lot better

Hmmm, let's see, at about the same price or less,
you get a screen, 2gb as well, fm radio, a microphone,
true drag-and-drop (through a firmware upgrade), LOUD volume, excellent sound, playlists, the ability to delete from the player itself, and of course a clip!

so why would I choose an ipod shuffle over the
way-better Sandisk clip? I wouldn't.

Sandisk also has a one-year over the counter exchange.

I've had mine for 2 months and I love mine.

How big can you go without playlists??

I suppose there are a select few out there who wouldn't mind setting 500
songs to shuffle, but not me. To me, it's just too much music for something
that can't be organized and navigated by albums and playlists. I have a fairly
large library, but I wouldn't want to randomly shuffle through such a big
chunk of it. Maybe a few albums at the most at one time. And forget about
finding a song you want in a mass of music that big.

What would make that much space usable? Some way of navigating playlists.
You wouldn't even need to add buttons. Just do a double-click or something
to move up and down your playlists. Something very simple that would make
the little Shuffle much more usable.

What? Is Apple in a time warp?

4-8 GB is more up to speed with current jump drive capacities.
Wake up, Steve!
