Microsoft extends Xbox 360 warranty to 1 year

Just in time for last-minute holiday shoppers, Microsoft has extended the Xbox 360's warranty from 90 days to one year, bringing it in line with the warranty lengths of rival game consoles from Sony and Nintendo.

The extension is retroactive, meaning that someone who bought an Xbox 360 in the United States or Canada and paid for repairs within the last year is eligible for reimbursement. In many other countries, a one-year warranty already is standard.

"Customer satisfaction is a central focus and priority for the Xbox 360 system," Jeff Bell, a marketing vice president at Microsoft, said in a statement Friday.

Microsoft also said reimbursement checks for repairs done in the last 12 months will be sent out automatically in about 10 weeks. Contact information for warranty questions is available on the Xbox support site.

Microsoft has been the target of an online petition--with 3,382 signatures as of Friday--calling for a retroactive warranty extension to one year. The petition claims that Xbox 360 systems frequently failed after the original 90-day warranty and that customers were unreasonably required to pay between $50 and $129 for repairs.

Nintendo's Wii comes with a standard one-year warranty, with a free 90-day extension if customers register their consoles on the company's Web site. Sony's PlayStation 3 comes with a one-year warranty.

Some credit cards, including American Express and Visa, extend the manufacturer's warranty if a product is bought using that card.

90 days? One year? You gotta be kidding...

In the European community EVERY product (from consumer electronics to cars) MUST carry, at least, a full TWO years warranty.
No one would ever buy a product with a one year warranty, let alone 90 days.

Microsoft is a cheap company, that's why they do stuff like this all the time.

Just look who the company is run by and their track record of being nice or fair and you should deduce your own answer.

I own the original Xbox, and I never had any problems with it, other then the ocasional freeze. I own the Xbox 360, and it crashed once and that was it.

So far so good, I had my xbox for about like 9 months or so, I think.

I am still going to end up buying the Wii for the wife, and the PS3 for my self, gotta have all the toys, life is short.

1 year is good...

...but now Microsoft should to include the HD DVD drive installed in the 360 unit at no additional cost. That would make a big difference in what system one would choose.

We need to have higher standards

If people could just get over the mania of owning the newest thing out right away, we could force manufacturers to carry better warranties. No one stands behind their product any more unless you pay them extra to do so. Very sad. 1 year is OK, but you know it'll break right after that.

Europe
by RompStar_420 December 22, 2006 8:41 AM PST
Depending on where in Europe, things are different. When I lived there 20 years ago, I liked it much better then the system we have here.

But I guess there are best things that one can find in any system, pros and cons to everything.

I also like some things that you can do here, and some that you can't. Like getting locked up for marijuana, this is almost laughable in Europe.

Locking up people for plants and building more jails at an alarming pace just to keep up with inmates. I personally am waiting for all the old farts to die from old age, so that our Congress is repopulated with the next generation of progress.

Old generation of greed and blindness, has to die off, and since it's illegal to hang people, we have to wait I guess :- )

All I know is that.....

There are 4000 chemicals in tobacco with 100 identified poisons and 63 known drugs which cause cancer. The most talked about drug in tobacco is nicotine. Nicotine is vasoconstrictor and a nerve toxin, it has been classified as a class I insecticide. Other poisons include: Arsenic, Cyanide, Formaldehyde (used to embalm bodies), Ammonia Bromide (a toilet cleaner )- Ref. 1. Each year, because of exposure to environmental tobacco smoke, an estimated 3,000 nonsmoking Americans die of lung cancer, and 300,000 children suffer from lower respiratory tract infections.

0 People a year die from smoking MJ, and hemp is hella better and more durable then cotton.

Yes, I am an idiot and you are not.

Phewww, can you say that in 12 languages, which I know how to speak ? lol

Residing to call anyone an idiot, shows off your wisdom. MJ can be eaten and vaporized, no need to smoke anything.

You are one of those people that believes all the BS your government feeds you on a daily basis.

All the best cars come from Europe and Japan (Asia), Chevy, Ford, and Chrysler suck big time.

If those people don't know how to work, design, and all that, then ya, I guess you don't have to worry about them.

IT IS your US (and well, mine now) Government that was pushing for globalization of the Economy and now you guys can't handle it.

So becareful what you wish for. When I attended standard highschool in Europe, Algebra I was thought in the 5th grade and II in the 6th, by the time you finished 8th grade, you have all the Calcilus and pretty much all the tough math done.

After high school, there is only Univercities, no such thing as a local community college.

You only have this in the US, because your educational system sucks and you have to import most of your talent, just look at Microsoft and how many people there who work there are from India and now they are taping China.

Most US companies already have exported your jobs, because you can't compete internally.

And of course there are exceptions to this, plenty of smart people here too, if they choose to go and get an education and acctually study and pay attention in the class room, so you don't forget what you learned 3 months later, for merly getting the grade.

Fact os life, are sometimes hard to swallow.

Also, you better Care About EUROPE, because they will be the ones saving yous ASS!, once Iran gets the NUKES and uses them on ISRAEL and maybe dirty bomb something else.

You will need their support to return the favor from WWII. Europe is the only ally you have, so don't make an enemy from the only friend you got.

Okay, this conversation has gone from the actual topic to how europians benefit from 2year warranty to how the US is better because of less taxes because of that to obesity problems compared from the US and Europe to finally why the US is better than Europe/Why Europe is better than the US.

The US is a powerful country, and an ally of Europe as a general. I'm from the UK and im fine with the way our country is run, sure there is problems but every country has problems. The educational system is fine in both countries.

Europe benefits from this whole 2year warranty thing, possibly better laws based on eating habits, etc. trying to keep our community healthy (among other things), clearly its not going to completely work. The US benefits from lower taxes and freedom to do as they wish (among other things), countries all have their faults, British people can be considered ignorant and posh. Americans can be considered as obese and stupid. They're just pathetic stereotypes. Were all trying to better ourselves and keep to our standards. America is meant to be a country of freedom, stopping them from eating what they want to is taking away their freedom further, they may not see it as a problem as long as theyre happy.

Sorted?
Okay, back on topic please.
