ST sharpens up new camera chip

European chipmaker STMicroelectronics announced the release Wednesday of a new digital camera image sensor based on CMOS (complimentary metal oxide semiconductor) technology. The new VV6600 can capture images at resolutions of up to 1.3 megapixels and is intended for use in midrange digital cameras and camcorders.

Charge-coupled device (CCD) sensors have been the more common choice of mainstream camera makers over the past few years, but CMOS sensors are making inroads. CMOS releases include a new chip design by start-up Foveon that promises dramatically improved image quality.
